What is Legal Metrology?
Legal Metrology establishes and enforces standards of weights and measures, and regulates trade in goods sold or distributed by weight, measure or number. A transparent and efficient legal metrology system inspires confidence in trade, industry and consumers, and provides a harmonised environment for conducting business.

The requirement
What is Legal Metrology Registration?
Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, made under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, anyone who manufactures, packs or imports a pre-packaged commodity for sale in India must obtain a Registration Certificate (commonly called the LMPC certificate) within 90 days of commencing pre-packing or import, whether the product is sold offline or through digital platforms.
Checklist
Declarations required on every pre-packaged commodity
Alongside registration, each retail pack must carry these Legal Metrology declarations:
- Name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer
- Country of origin (for imported goods)
- Common or generic name of the commodity
- Net quantity in standard units
- Month and year of manufacture or import
- Retail sale price (MRP inclusive of all taxes)
- Unit sale price (e.g. ₹ per g / kg or ml / l)
- Consumer care details (phone and email)

Licensing of Food Business
FSSAI License/Registration is a government licence that grants approval to your business and oversees its operations. As a condition of approval, the Food Business Operator (FBO) is expected to follow set rules and criteria for its operations.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) governs the registration and licensing of food businesses in India.

FSSAI Registration
Up to ₹1.5 crore annual turnover
Generally includes small food businesses such as petty manufacturers, small retailers, and local food vendors.
02
FSSAI State License
Above ₹1.5 crore – ₹50 crore annual turnover
Medium-scale food manufacturers, processors, distributors, and restaurant chains typically fall under this category.
03
FSSAI Central License
Above ₹50 crore annual turnover
Large manufacturers, importers, exporters, and large-scale food operators generally require this license.
